Sheridan Opera House
Plan a getaway with loved ones to a resort town like no other. Colorado is dotted with many of these cozy mountain resort towns that offer plenty of activities throughout the year. Historic Telluride offers those activities, including a myriad of shows and performances at the historic Telluride Sheridan Opera House. The opera house is located at 110 North Oak Street in Telluride. You can learn more about the opera house, including their upcoming show schedule and ticket sales, on their website.
Early History
In 1912, J.A. Segerberg, manager of the New Sheridan Hotel found an answer to a problem. Telluride’s population had boomed through mining, “high culture” blossomed, and the upper class began hosting lavish parties and events. Segerberg looked to the laundry behind the hotel to develop plans for a three-story opera house. The Segerberg Theater opened in 1913 and quickly became host to traveling theater troupes, speakers, moving pictures, and high society events. In the 1960s, it was renamed the Sheridan after the neighboring New Sheridan Hotel.
Present Day
The Sheridan Opera House is still a hub for cultural experiences in Telluride. Wild West Fest hosts up to 50 youth from various Boys and Girls Clubs across the country with programs like the Chip Allen Mentorship Program. There is no cost to attend. Telluride Plein Air is an opportunity for plein air artists to come paint the architecture and landscapes of Telluride. Young People’s Theater attracts 250 youths ages 2-18 to produce full-length musicals, as well as a variety of classes. Outside of these events, the Telluride Sheridan opera house is often in use up to 250 days a year, hosting private events, Sheridan Arts Foundation events, and many other shows.
Sheridan Arts Foundation
In 1991, the foundation was created to help with the restoration and preservation of the Sheridan opera house. Through meticulous planning and execution, the foundation has raised over $2 million dollars to restore the historic structure, as well as offer theatrical and cultural experiences for the people of Telluride. The foundation always appreciates donations to their fundraising efforts.
