Bear Creek Falls

Colorado is full of big and small towns that are perfect for year-round outdoor adventure. If you’re looking for the small-town charm, history, and plenty of outdoor fun, set your sights on Telluride. You’ll find an array of outdoor activities and locales that offer the fun you’ve been craving for your next respite. Located in Bear Creek Preserve, the Bear Creek Falls is a must-see for your Telluride trail-exploring experience.

How to Get There

Telluride is a walkable town, so you can start your exploration on foot, even from town. You can also decide to save your energy for the trails. Take Colorado Avenue in downtown and turn south onto Pine Street and continue onto the dirt road that becomes Bear Creek Trail. Follow the road to the welcome sign for the 325-acre Bear Creek Preserve.

The Trail

The moderate, out-and-back trail is 2.3 miles each way and has an elevation change of 1,050 feet on its way to the Upper and Lower falls. It can take up to an hour-and-a-half to reach the upper falls. Two miles in on trail #635, you’ll reach the lower waterfall, and later the upper waterfall. The Bear Creek Falls trail is multi-use, so you’ll be sharing it with hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. The trail also connects to Wasatch Trail, which continues up the canyon.

Activities

Once an old mining road, the hike is a fairly easy one. Everyone from seasoned hikers to young children and even leashed dogs can easily enjoy the Bear Creek Falls trail. Its easy terrain is also great for bikers and horseback riders, meaning everyone needs to share the trail and obey proper trail etiquette. You can also enjoy the rest of the preserve after your adventure to the falls. The 325-acre preserve is full of other trails, natural beauty, and serenity.
