Jud Wiebe Trail
Colorado is full of big and small towns that are perfect for year-round outdoor adventure. If you’re looking for the small-town charm, history, and plenty of outdoor fun, set your sights on Telluride. Experience the power of the San Miguel River and beautiful mountain vistas that are camera-worthy every step of the way of the Jud Wiebe Trail. This is one of the first trails to melt out in the spring and if you’re here in late spring or throughout the summer months, wildflowers will be in full bloom.
How to Get There
The loop trail starts and ends in town and is a moderate hike. The trailhead is at the north end of Aspen Street and onto a gravel road toward the trailhead. You can easily get there on foot.
The Trail
The moderate, 3.1-mile loop has an elevation change of 1,213 feet. After the trailhead, you’ll cross a bridge over a creek to the official starting ascent point. There are turnoffs for other sights like Mill Creek, but you’ll want to stay to the right and straight on to continue on the trail. There are a number of switchbacks, but the summit comes into view faster than you think. At the top, rest for a while, have a picnic, and make sure to get plenty of pictures including breathtaking views of Ajax Peak, Bear Creek, and the back of the Telluride canyon. You can come back the way you came, or continue on the loop through conifer forests, aspen groves, mountain meadows and more before reaching town and Tomboy Road.
Activities
The moderately challenging route of Jud Wiebe Memorial Trail is great for everyone from seasoned hikers to families who want a bit of a challenge. Its easy terrain is also great for bikers and horseback riders, meaning everyone needs to share the trail and obey proper trail etiquette. Take your camera to capture all the natural beauty along the way. If you choose to continue on after reaching the summit, you’ll also need to watch for ATV and 4-wheel drive vehicles heading out to Imogene Pass via Tomboy Road.
